Destination wedding: Dressing the groom and groomsmen

A destination wedding is not your traditional wedding, so once you’ve decided you want a wedding that’s uniquely you, it’s time to think about what your groom and his groomsmen will be wearing to reflect the style you’ve chosen.

What makes it the perfect destination wedding for you? You and your groom can decide together what will be the best expression of who you are as a couple. If you plan to get away to someplace warm, a beach wedding might be for you. And there are lots of great beaches where you can get married, all vibrant and fun. Hawaii and the Caribbean are two of the most popular places for destinationweddings. The groom and groomsmen can dress in anything from Hawaiian-print shirts and linen suits to tank tops and shorts or swimming trunks. The most popular attire lately for beach and outdoor weddings are tan, light weight, cotton or linen suits. Brooks Brothers has several styles, and these make great groomsmen gifts.

If you both love to go hiking and be outdoors, maybe a lakeside hideaway wedding will make you say “I do.” Think woodsy colors and wildflowers, with the guys dressed in anything from blazers and slacks to khakis and flannel shirts.

Does the city make you happy? A New York destination might be just the thing. Take your wedding entourage out on the town for a Broadway show and a night of dancing. Then make your wedding a party with suits, and ties to match the bridesmaids’ dresses, or go full-glam with James Bond white jackets and black pants.

Maybe you’d rather be hitting the slopes. How about a white wedding in a snowy wonderland? Travel to the mountains for snowboarding, skiing or just sitting in a lodge in front of a roaring fireplace. A fire and candlelit ceremony with rich-colored velvets and winter white tuxes will make you shine.

You can tie it all together with a wearable gift – cufflinks are always a great choice. Personalize each one with an engraving for the wearer’s personality. Not just initials (which are certainly fine), but maybe a symbol of what they do or like – for a doctor, a caduceus; for a sailor, a captain’s wheel, and so on. Watches, a tie pin or other jewelry will work, too. Make it something that says you, and “thank you.”

Things to remember about deciding on what your groom and groomsmen should wear for a destination wedding:

• Comfort and wearability (especially shoes)
• Ease of packing/transport or availability at site
• Appropriateness to the environment (weather, surroundings)

Destination weddings have become a trend in recent years because they’re fun and different and can be a lot less stress for the bride and groom. There are always special challenges you’ll face, depending on your location, but you can have the storybook wedding you’ve always dreamed of, with your Prince Charming dressed to impress.
