Tips & Advice
When considering what you want your attendants to wear, there are several things to consider, including your location, the time of year and the climate. Once you know when and where and what the weather will be, there are several other things you should consider when deciding how to dress your bridal attendants.
If you order something from home, you will have to decide where the dresses will be delivered. If each of your bridesmaids will receive their dress at their home, it will have to be transported to your destination wedding locale. If that is the case, you’ll need to know how well the fabric will travel, whether it will need pressing or steaming before the ceremony, and if your attendant can fit it into a carry-on, because you don’t want to check ANY of your dresses. If the airline misplaced your luggage or it got damaged, it could ruin your wedding day for you.
Start with a list of things your bridesmaids might need to complete their wedding look:
• Dress
• Shoes
• Purse
• Undergarments (like slip and matching bra)
• Hair accessories
• Wrap (if needed, like a shawl or shrug)
• Jewelry (these also make a great bridesmaid gift, like earrings or a necklace)
Pick the things you need, and remember if the bridesmaids are paying for their own outfit, you shouldn’t press them to add extras, like new shoes if they all have shoes in the same color, or jewelry or a purse they can’t afford. They’re already spending money to be there for you, so try to keep the financial burden as light as you can when you ask them to be a part of your destination wedding.
Now, match the look with your wedding dress and your destination wedding theme. Fancy formals may look out of place at a casual beach wedding, a Mexico wedding and even a Caribbean wedding. For a beach wedding, perhaps all the bridesmaids could choose a pastel or white dress in the general style and length with similar sandals to share a relaxed and easygoing ceremony. For a Mexico wedding, you could make your color scheme the bright reds and yellows of festive Mexican clothing and choose pretty cotton frocks to play up traditional Mexico. The lush blues and fuschias of the Caribbean lend themselves to exotic dresses of any style and length and jewel-toned heels for the dance floor.
One other thing to consider is the culture of your destination wedding locale. Some countries have certain values regarding appropriate and acceptable dress for women. Be aware if there are any such restrictions where you want to get married, and make sure your wedding party and even your guests know ahead of time, so you and your guests don’t appear ill-mannered at your destination wedding. Once you’ve covered all the bases, you and your party can relax and enjoy your celebration. |
