Q & A: To host an at-home reception or not?

Most of the time, couples who have a destination wedding don’t have very many guests attend their wedding as a traditional, at-home wedding. That is why many choose to have a wedding reception with friends and family after they get home from their destination wedding.

Destination weddings are usually not as cheap for the wedding guests. Often, unless they are in the wedding party or are immediate family, invited guests will not come to a destination wedding. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t want to celebrate your marriage with you. That is why a wedding reception at home after your destination wedding may be a great idea. Some friends and family members may even be disappointed if you don’t have some sort of reception or party when you get home. If you want to celebrate with a large group for friends and family, but recognize that many of them can't make the trip to attend your destination wedding in-person, then by all means throw yourself a wedding reception when you get home!

One thing that you have to remember when having a reception after a destination wedding is the cost. If you really want an at-home wedding reception, make sure that you figure this into your wedding budget. Depending on what type of wedding reception you will be having and how many people you invite, it may end up being quite a bit of money. This may be the number one reason why a new couple may not have a reception at home after their destination wedding. You don’t have to have an elaborate reception if you can’t afford it. But, whether over the top or a backyard party, most guests will expect some basics: a location, food of some sort, drinks, and usually a wedding cake.

Another thing that you have to consider in deciding if you will have a wedding reception at home is how many people may come. If you don’t live near friends or family and they would have to travel to your wedding reception, it may not be a good choice for you. For instance, If they weren’t willing to travel to your Hawaiian wedding, then they most likely will not want to travel to your hometown for a wedding reception. If you still want to have a wedding reception and you don’t have friends and family nearby, considering going to where your family is. Check with your parents or other family members to see if the could help plan a reception or party with you in their city. Most of the time, they will be more than willing to help so they can celebrate with you.

Some couple may just not want a wedding reception at all. Some couples who have destination weddings do so because they don’t want to have a big wedding or a big guest list to deal with. They may see marriage as an intimate affair between just the two of them. If you or your fiancée feels like this, don’t feel pressure to have to have a wedding reception when you get home. Do what is best for you and what you want, as it is your wedding and no one else’s.
