There are nonstop flights from Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Newark as well.
Entry Requirements
US citizens do not need passports for entry to St. Thomas. All that is required of US citizens is a document to serve as proof of citizenship. Accepted documents include a birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship, or a consular report of birth abroad. All documents must be shown in addition to a government issued photo ID. Voter registration cards are not accepted as proof of citizenship.
Renting a Car and Getting Around in St. Thomas
The easiest way to get around in St. Thomas is by taxi. Taxis are unmetered and while fares are posted all over, it’s still better to negotiate the fare before getting into a taxi. Around $2 to $4 is charged per piece of luggage and a surcharge of one-third of the total price is added after midnight. If you’re planning to head outside of Charlotte Amalie, it’s hard to hail a taxi so you may need to rent a car to get around. Taxi vans are also available. The vans can be found throughout the island and transport 8 to 12 passengers at a time. It’s cheaper to take taxi vans from the airport to your hotel.
Rental cars are readily available in St. Thomas for those who would like to get off the beaten path. The three biggest rental car agencies in St. Thomas are Avis, Budget, and Hertz, which all have offices at the airport. Local agencies are usually cheaper but their vehicles are not as well-maintained. No tax is charged for car rentals in the Virgin Islands. Roads in St. Thomas narrow and curvy so drivers must take the necessary precautions. You must always drive on the left. The speed limit is 25mph in town and 35mph outside of town.
