Puerto Rico Travel Tips

Puerto Rico Destination Weddings - Getting There and Getting Around

Puerto Rico is a very convenient location for destination wedding couples and guests because it is a U.S. territory. If you are a US citizen, all you need to have with you to enter Puerto Rico is a government-issued ID and you won’t have to worry about exchanging currency before you go. Flight times are also relatively short because of the island’s proximity to the US. If you want to get away from it all without having to apply for a passport or go to the other side of the world, Puerto Rico is the most convenient choice for your destination wedding.

Flight Information

San Juan’s International Airport is the hub of the Caribbean and thus one of the easiest and most affordable destinations to reach in the region. You can get non-stop flights to San Juan from Atlanta via Delta, Chicago via American Airlines and United, Houston via Continental, New York via American Airlines, Delta, United, and Jet Blue, and Orlando via Jet Blue, Delta, and Spirit. You can also fly non-stop to Aguadilla from New York via Jet Blue and to Ponce from New York via Continental and Jet Blue. There are also airports in Fajardo, Culebra, Vieques, and Mayaguez. It takes 2.5 hours to fly to Puerto Rico from Miami, 3.5 hours from New York City, and 4.5 hours from Chicago.

Renting a Car in Puerto Rico

If you aren’t planning to leave San Juan, it really isn’t worthwhile to rent a car because taxis are a more convenient and economical option. However, if you’d like to get out of the city and explore all that this gorgeous island has to offer, renting a car is a good choice. Renting a car in Puerto Rico allows you to visit small villages on the coast and mountains, secluded beaches, and national parks that would otherwise be impossible to see. Driving in Puerto Rico can be difficult however due to the narrow roads, poor road conditions, aggressive driving, and occurrence of landslides in mountainous areas. Car theft is also very common so you must take precautions.

Local car rental agencies are notorious for charging hidden extra costs so it’s best to stick with large rental car companies like Avis, Budget, and Hertz to avoid problems. These agencies offer transport to their offices so you can pick up your vehicle. You must be at least 25 years old to rent a car from Avis or Budget and at least 21 years old to rent a car from Hertz.

Destination Wedding Packages in Puerto Rico

If you don’t have time to plan your wedding by yourself or you’d simply rather relax and let a wedding planner take care of every last detail, contact a local wedding planner in Puerto Rico or stay at a resort that offers wedding packages. Caribbean Planning, LLC offers destination wedding packages that are completely customizable based on your wants and needs. If you want to plan a large, extravagant wedding or you’d like to purchase a wedding package with all the bells and whistles, your best bet is to head to a large resort such as the San Juan Marriot and Stellaris Casino. Wedding packages at the San Juan Marriot include a certified wedding planner, a ceremony at the beachside terrace ballroom, and a 4-star menu. If you would prefer a more intimate setting off the beaten path, there are numerous small hotels and villas that offer more private destination wedding packages. One such venue is The Pineapple Inn in Rincon, Puerto Rico, which has discounted wedding packages that offer the ultimate romantic getaway.

In conclusion, Puerto Rico is an excellent destination wedding location because of its convenience and diverse range of options. It’s very easy to plan a trip to Puerto Rico so if you want to avoid all of the complexities and issues that are often inevitable when you travel abroad, Puerto Rico is a great alternative.
