Kauai Wedding Travel Tips

Travel Tips for Destination Wedding Couples and Guests Going to Kauai

Kauai is the perfect destination wedding location for couples from the US because it is easy to get to, safe, and no passport is required.  Getting there and getting around is relatively easy.  Kauai is home to stunning natural attractions and complete wedding packages, making it an appealing and convenient option for destination wedding couples.  The natural beauty of Kauai is unmatched and it’s easy to see why this gorgeous island has been referred to as the gem of the Pacific.

Flying to Kauai

Kauai is served by Lihue Airport, just a couple miles away from downtown Lihue.  It is a good idea to get a direct flight to Kauai if possible.  Otherwise you will have a layover in Honolulu which will require you to change planes and wait for two hours or more at the airport.  International flights to Kauai do not exist but from the mainland US you can find direct flights.  United Airlines and American Airlines offer direct flights to Lihue, Kauai from Los Angeles, America West has a flight from Phoenix to Lihue, and SunTrips has a flight from Oakland to Lihue.  Other airlines only offer flights to Honolulu.  The flight from Honolulu to Lihue takes 30 minutes.  Flying to Lihue from Los Angeles takes about 5 hours and 25 minutes.

Getting Around Kauai

Getting around Kauai is near impossible without a rental car.  Once you arrive to the airport you will have to rent a car or take a cab to get to your hotel.  There are no shuttle services available at the airport.  Thankfully, renting a car and driving in Kauai is very easy.  You will find some of the lowest car rental rates in the US in Hawaii.  You must be at least 25 years old to rent a car in Kauai and have a valid driver’s license and credit card.  The car rental agency offices are across the street from the Lihue Airport.  You will find Budget, Hertz, National, Avis, and Dollar offices there.  Alamo is not recommended in Kauai because of their notoriously long wait times.  It is a good idea to reserve your car rental well ahead of time, particularly during the holidays.  Rental cars are usually sold out on holiday weekends in Kauai.  There are only two major highways in Kauai so driving there is very easy.

Departure Requirements

All passengers leaving Hawaii for the mainland must be screened by agricultural officials prior to boarding their plane.  In order to control fruit flies, the officials will confiscate fresh produce such as mangoes, bananas, and avocadoes.  Processed foods, leis without seeds, and boxed flowers are okay to take home, as are coconuts, papayas, and pineapples that are certified for export.

Destination Wedding Packages in Kauai

Whether you want a simple barefoot beach wedding or a large extravaganza at a big resort, you will be able to find a destination wedding package to suit your wants, needs, and budget in Kauai.  There are numerous local wedding planners that can help you plan the ceremony of your dreams atop a cliff overlooking the Pacific, in a garden gazebo, or on a white sand beach at sunset.  Rainbow Weddings and Tropical Dream Wedding are planners that can help you plan your event, whether large or small.  If you’d like to have your wedding at a large resort, check out the Kauai Marriot Resort and Beach Club or the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa.  At these resorts, you will be able to enjoy a diverse range of activities, partake in fine, catered cuisine, and have access to a number of exotic venues for your ceremony, reception, and photography sessions.
