Dominican Republic Activities

Tips on Activities Destination Wedding Couples and Guests Can Enjoy in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Most destination wedding couples choose the Dominican Republic for their wedding in order to enjoy a relaxing, tropical vacation on the beach. However, there are a vast number of other adventurous activities that destination wedding couples can enjoy in the Dominican Republic including canyoning, deep sea fishing, and mountain biking, to name a few. Some destinations are suited to certain activities more so than others so make sure to take this into consideration when deciding on a location for your destination wedding.

Water Sports in the Dominican Republic

Destination wedding couples and guests who are water sports enthusiasts will find plenty to do to stay busy in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic features some of the clearest waters in the West Indies and deep-sea fishing is a popular sport amongst locals and tourists alike. Deep-sea fishing has become even more popular in recent years due to the development of numerous, well-equipped marinas. In popular resort regions such as Punta Cana and La Romana, it’s very easy to find boat tour operators and boat charters. It costs around USD $500 to charter a boat for a full day for deep-sea fishing. In the Dominican Republic, you can catch exotic fish like marling and wahoo.

Wakeboarding, waterskiing, tubing, and jet skiing are popular water sports in areas of the Dominican Republic that don’t have reefs or excessive boat traffic. For example, you can enjoy these active sports on the flat waters of the beautiful Yasica River in Cabarete. Boca Chica, which is just a 15 minute drive east of the international airport in Santo Domingo, is home to a small cove that is protected by a reef. This means that the waters of the cove are very calm and crystal clear. Boca Chica is very safe for children and perfect for water sports like snorkeling, water skiing, kayaking, wind surfing, and jet skiing.

Mountain Biking

Destination wedding couples and guests with a taste for adventure can enjoy mountain biking throughout the Dominican Republic. Most mountain biking takes place in the northern and central mountain ranges, which are known as the Cordillera Septentrional and the Cordillera Central, respectively. Anyone from a total beginner to a seasoned mountain biker can find a suitable trail in the Dominican Republic. There are a number of unpaved roads and mule trails to be enjoyed by mountain bikers in the Dominican Republic. Mountain biking provides an excellent way for destination wedding couples and their guests to see and experience small villages, flora and fauna, and otherwise less accessible areas.

Whale-Watching

If you are planning your destination wedding in the Dominican Republic between mid-January and mid-March, you may have the opportunity to go whale-watching in Samana Bay on the east coast. Each year more than 10,000 humpback whales make their way back to the waters of the Dominican Republic from the North Atlantic to mate and breed. While it largely depends on where in the Dominican Republic you are staying, whale watching tours to Samana typically leave very early in the morning to ensure that you have plenty of time to enjoy your stay there. Marine guides are present on all whale-watching boat excursions.

Horseback Riding
There are numerous equestrian ranches located throughout the Dominican Republic. Whether you are an expert rider or a total beginner, you’re sure to find an appropriate horseback riding tour for you in the Dominican Republic. You can work with a ranch in the area where you are staying to organize a horseback riding tour that is perfect for you and your destination wedding guests. You can choose to ride through the lush tropical forests inland or along the white sand beaches of the Dominican coast. Typically, horseback riding tours include a picnic lunch.

There are a diverse range of fun and adventurous activities to be enjoyed in the Dominican Republic. For destination wedding couples and guests who want to get away from it all but still want to enjoy a wildly active and exciting vacation, the Dominican Republic offers numerous options to keep you busy. Because of its sheer size, geographical diversity, and excellent tourist infrastructure, the Dominican Republic offers a virtually limitless number of activities for destination wedding couples and guests to participate in.
